Taranaki is home to so many talented artists, designers and creators. We wanted to create a space for local people to share their passion and sell their work, so that's what we did!
Kete Aronui is an online store and gallery that showcases Taranaki made art, design and gifts. Located in a stunning space on Tasman Street in Opunake, our gallery and gift store has a wide range of products from emerging and established Taranaki makers. The space is constantly evolving with new works of art, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, prints, greenstone, cards, artisan food and coffee on display.
The meaning of Kete Aronui is the basket of knowledge of aroha, peace and the arts and crafts which benefit the Earth and all living things - one of the three baskets of knowledge from Maori legend. This sums up our philosophy perfectly. Art is for people to share and enjoy and creativity connects us. We get great pleasure in giving artists a place to display their work and playing our part in the thriving local creative scene.
Our focus on quality items from our region of Taranaki allows us to build great longstanding relationships with our artists. Storytelling is at the heart of creativity and we take the time to get a deep understanding of our artists and their works which we then share with our customers in-store and online.
The owners are husband and wife team, Monica and Scott Willson. Drawn to Taranaki by the lifestyle opportunities available for their young son, the family quickly fell in love with the region, it's rich history, beautiful scenery and friendly people. Monica is a talented photographer with an eye for sourcing artists from all over Taranaki. Scott uses his background in marketing management to maximise the exposure that all of our artists receive to customers worldwide.
